Care and Maintenance of Western Red Cedar Siding by Lumber Out West
Handling Discoloration and Wear
The surfaces of finished Western Red Cedar decks, siding and trim boards exposed outdoors inevitably become dirty and can also be discolored by mildew, algae and moss. These natural elements slowly erode the finishes and as a result, all finishes applied to cedar require regular cleaning and maintenance to perform. The degree of maintenance depends on local climatic conditions, the type of finish and end use (deck or siding). Another factor is sun and weather exposure. If one side of your house gets more sun and rain exposure it will need more care than the other sides. Most stains have to be reapplied after 2-4 years, depending on the stain type (transparent, semi-transparent or solid color).
