About Siding, Paneling, Decking & Flooring Sold As Downgrade.
REASONS WHY YOU DON’T WANT TO BUY
“DOWNGRADE” LUMBER:
- DOWNGRADE WON’T WEATHER WELL!
DOWNGRADE SIDING: Tongue and groove, as well as lap siding, is designed to be weather-resistant by overlapping between boards. When this overlapping is breeched (due to chips, dings and loose knots) the siding is no longer resistant to leaks. The damaged edge may look okay once it's installed, and wood putty may hold the loose knots in place for a while, but these hidden flaws are still weak points in the construction of your siding. Over time they allow water to seep in and insects to invade, causing damage behind.
DOWNGRADE DECKING: Wood putty used to hold loose knots in decking will weather and knots will fall out. This compromises both the beauty and structure of your deck.
DOWNGRADE FLOORING: You can spend a great deal of time trying to make downgrade oak (or other wood) flooring look presentable. You can sand the splinters, fill the cracks and lay a coat of polyurethane over the entire floor. Epoxy, flooring filler and wood putty will all discolor over time, and don't have the durability of the wood itself. Cracks and defects collect dirt and the filler will chip and yellow.
- PURCHASING DOWNGRADE WOOD DOES NOT SAVE YOU MONEY!
Prices for downgrade wood are not actually a discount at all, but are the market price for downgrade, inferior wood.
You need to buy as much as 30% extra downgrade wood “than you ever think you’ll need.” So much for savings.
Buying downgrade wood now could end up costing you a great deal more later when you have to replace it.
- DOWNGRADE WOOD IS VERY LABOR-INTENSIVE & TIME-CONSUMING
TO INSTALL!
With downgrade wood you must spend a lot of labor-intensive time trying to “make it work”, by bending, wedging, and cutting, filling empty knots and filling gaps with wood putty. Due to damage on the tongue and groove edges, the time required to install this siding is about 50% more than the time it takes to install our Select Tight Knot Quality Siding. What will your contractor’s bill for a 150 hour installation be, compared to a 100 hour installation? If you install the siding yourself, consider the extra time you’ll spend puttying loose knots and cutting out unusable sections in downgrade wood.
It's a good idea to remember:
Downgrade wood can be disguised under other names,
including #3 Common, #3 Grade or Rough/Rustic Grade.
When talking with a lumber company, make sure you find out
the grade of wood you could be purchasing.
