Beautiful western red cedar home by Lumber Out West
After your purchase of high-end cedar siding from Lumber Out West it is important to properly install your investment. Improperly installed siding will not be warrantied for any possible claims in the future. The most commonly made mistake by homeowners is over-nailing their siding during installation.
Spacing for the siding should be laid out beforehand. The number of board spaces between the soffit and bottom of the lowest piece of siding at the foundation should be such that the overlap is as per the table.
Start with the bottom course using a furring strip to support the lower edge. Each succeeding course overlaps the upper edge of the previous one by a minimum of 1 inch. Rabbeted patterns are self-spacing, but leave 1/8 inch expansion clearance. Where possible, the bottom of the board that is placed across the top of the windows should coincide with the window cap.

Don’t be fooled by lumber companies claiming to have discounted wood for sale. What this really means is they are selling inferior, lower grade wood at the current market price and claiming it is a “good deal”. These companies will also try to re-tag wood grades into their own special grade and make it sound new and interesting when in fact it is a common grade re-termed by their company. More often than not Lumber Out West can beat their pricing by more than a little in savings. Call us toll free at 866-972-7301 or send us an email for a quote.

Western red cedar is sold by the “grade” or quality of the milled lumber. When a tree is logged it is transferred to the lumber mill and sorted into separate piles depending on its’ quality. This separation allows the mill to take all the logs of a specific grade and mill them together saving time. The grades are separated by the quality of the wood which basically means knotty cedar or clear cedar. The knotty grades are used for fencing, decking, and structural support where the knots do not detract from the aesthetic look of the project. The clear grades are used when a more clean, finished look is desired whether for indoor paneling or outdoor siding and decking.
Western Red Cedar (WRC) decking substantially outperformed composite decking in each of the seven criteria tested and was by far the product with the least environmental impact when compared with both virgin and recycled wood-plastic composite decking products. Even after subjecting the cedar decking results to a ‘worst case’ scenario in which WRC required the replacement of 20% of boards in normal service and periodic application of coatings, the environmental impact results remained strongly favorable to Western Red Cedar over the ‘best case’ scenario for composite decking.
