Remember, when buying cedar siding, or redwood siding for that matter, be careful about discounted wood products. What this means is that the siding has been sitting around the lumber yard for some time and the lumber company is simply trying to dump old inventory. Siding is meant to be used in a timely fashion from the time it gets milled to installation. The longer the siding sits before installation the more cupping, bowing and checking will occur. Another trick lumber companies use to sell inferior products is they go through the siding and separate out all the high-end material and sell it as a separate, more expensive siding. They then sell the leftover siding at a “discount” but this really means the siding is being sold at market value. Lumber Out West only sells the highest quality western red cedar. Cedar is the much preferred choice of homebuilders over other types of construction materials. Cedar siding is resistant to insects and fares better over time in inclement weather. Once properly pre-stained, cedar will maintain its look for years and only needs a fresh coat of stain every 3-5 years, depending on the stain. When quality is your main concern, Lumber Out West will only sell the best cedar siding available on the market. No shortcuts are taken to make an extra buck.
Western Red Cedar bevel siding is the most widely-used siding type. It is produced by resawing lumber at an angle to produce two pieces thicker on one edge than the other. The manufacturing process results in pieces with one face saw textured. The other face is smooth or saw textured depending on the grade and customer preference. Bevel siding is installed horizontally and gives an attractive shadow line which varies with the thickness of siding selected.
On the job site, keep wood dry. Stack siding off the ground and under cover. If the wood is to be stored
over damp ground or new concrete, place a moisture barrier under the siding. Siding should be 4 to 6
inches above the ground with air circulating freely around and throughout the stack. Acclimatization time
varies with the moisture content of the siding.
Acclimatize Siding Before installing
One of the most stable softwoods, Western Red Cedar is nevertheless a natural material and it responds to the environment. Cedar siding can swell or shrink as it gains or loses moisture to reach equilibrium with the moisture content of the surrounding air. Ensuring that the moisture content of cedar siding is at equilibrium before it is installed will minimize movement later on.
