Your Satisfaction Starts
with the Quality of the Wood You Purchase.
We Can Help You Choose the
Perfect Wood for Your Project,
From Economical to Top-End Grades.
There are over 30 different grades of redwood lumber and several of these are typically used for Decking. Grading criteria is defined by the Redwood Inspection Service of the California Redwood Association, assuring that the Redwood you buy from us will be the excellent quality you expect.
Redwood is graded by appearance and durability. Clear grades are almost knot-free. Durability and resistance to insects and decay relates to the color of the Redwood. Heartwoods, which are reddish-brown, contain natural preservative oils. Cream-colored sapwood doesn't contain these oils, so is less decay and insect-resistant.
Our Redwood Decking is Available in Several Grades (premium to economical):
B Grade: Contains only limited knots, contains sapwood.
ConHeart: Heartwood grade containing knots.
ConCommon: Same general characteristics as ConHeart, but contains sapwood, as well as heartwood.
ConHeart and ConCommon are very good choices for decks, fences and garden structures where knots have little effect.
For wood that will be near soil, durable heartwood, such as ConHeart is essential.
ADVANTAGES OF REDWOOD OVER OTHER SPECIES
Redwood has numerous specific advantages over fir, pine and other softwoods. Natural durability, dimensional stability and resistance to weathering, decay and warping make Redwood the perfect choice for your deck. Its natural preservative oils allow this wood to strongly resist insects and decay.
Redwood's dimensional stability is particularly valuable where exterior applications (decking, siding, fencing) expose the wood to wide temperature and humidity changes.
Redwood is light-weight so it's easy to move around and work with when constructing your deck.

TWO DECKING PATTERNS TO CHOOSE FROM:
Our direct purchasing from our lumber mills allows you to choose from Traditional 2 x 6 decking, smooth on all four sides, or our specially-milled Unideck Pattern. The price is the same for either design.

Cross-section of Unideck Pattern
The Unideck Pattern is milled so the top side of each board is slightly convex, allowing water to run off more easily during rain or as snow melts. This also makes the deck easier to clean. An additional advantage of the Unideck Design is that it is milled with 3 kerfs, or channels, along the back of each board. These add to the dimensional stability of the deck. They help keep the boards flat and straight over time.
