THE TRUTH ABOUT WHITE FIR

On this scale of 1 to 5 (1 denoting the highest quality, 5 the lowest),
White Fir rates as follows:
             Natural Durability: 5 (lowest possible)
             Shrinkage: 4
             Checking, Weathering & Warping: 2
             Paint Holding: 3

These are the physical properties which determine the suitability of a wood to be milled into Siding, Paneling, and Decking. Cedar and Redwood rate #1 in all these properties!

According to the U.S. Forest Service, and numerous academic research institutes, Cedar is vastly superior to white fir in every Siding, Decking, Paneling and Fencing application: Durability, Shrinkage, Checking, Weathering, Warping, Paint Holding, Insulation Value and Workability. Don't be taken by false claims about the quality of these woods. Depend on the Experts. The Truth is, there is no method of preparing white fir that will replace the qualities it lacks.

White Fir is primarily used for general construction, including rough boards, studs and dimension timbers, not Siding, Paneling and Decking. The table above illustrates why this is true. According to Colorado State University educational publications much of the white fir lumber is "used historically for sub-flooring, wall and roof sheathing". Because of its low cost, white fir is often used for boxes, crates and pulpwood. It is clearly inferior for Siding, Paneling and Decking.
